From: The Green Council, Lower Merion School District, Montgomery County, PA.  19003

Subject:  Letter of invitation to join the council

Purpose:  To formulate an environmentally sustainable living policy for Lower Merion School District that will be
adopted by all the buildings in the district.  To become a model for other districts in the region and in the State of
Pennsylvania

Introduction:  Joe Mudd at Penn Valley Elementary School, and Glenn Rosazza at Lower Merion High School got
together over five years to make effective solid waste management and energy/water conservation a reality in their
respective schools.  Through the efforts of Lower Merion School District Operations Department, administrators,
staff, students and parents, a significant increase in the amount of recyclable goods has been achieved, and a district-
wide strategic energy plan has been adopted.  However, much more needs to and can be done.

The residents of Lower Merion Township and members of Lower Merion School District are waste management and
energy/water conservation savvy.  Even so, it’s amazing to see the amount of waste generated, and the amount of
energy/water wasted by one high school and one small elementary school.  The issues surrounding waste management
and energy/water conservation have been placed on the back burner long enough.  Now, with the building of two new
LEED certified high schools, Lower Merion School District has an opportunity to take a leadership role in addressing
these concerns, and become a model for our region, the rest of the state, and possibly for the nation.

Invitation: We invite you to join our council and be part of an exciting and much needed effort on behalf of the
environment and the economy that will raise our quality of living and ensure the health and safety of all living species
that call Lower Merion Township there home.  If interested please contact Joe (muddj@lmsd.org) or Glenn
(rosazzg@lmsd.org).
